A woman who
suffered a grave physical assault from her husband in August 2016 has expressed
her willingness to forgive him.
45-year-old
Tiperia Afamiliona had been married to Atinae Afamiliona, 50, and together they
have three children.
An
unfortunate incident happened last year while they were driving home from an
outing in western Sydney. The couple got engaged in a heated argument about
their relationship.
Suddenly,
Tiperia told her husband that she wanted out of the marriage and therefore
proposed that they should officially separate.
Atinae would
have none of that, so he parked the car by the roadside, picked up a machete,
and used it on his wife. With the machete, he hacked off her fingers and toes
leaving her permanently disfigured.
After his
arrest following the gruesome attack, the husband was handed a nine-year jail
term - with six years non-parole.
However,
Tiperia has decided to forgive him in spite of the fact that she still suffers
pain and discomfort from the permanent damage he caused her.
She has had
some of her fingers and toes surgically removed after she had sustained deep
cuts on her hands, feet, arms, and legs.
The woman
was also quick to add that her forgiving Atinae does not imply she will take
him back when he completes his jail term. According to her, she did it for
herself.
She said, ‘I
have forgiven Atinae for myself; I have forgiven him so I can move forward.’
She also added, ‘this does not mean what he has done is okay.’
The
mother-of-three said that she used to be an independent woman before her
husband’s attack disfigured her.
She feels so
sad and lonely at the moment and she is reminded of the attack each time she
looks down at her hand and feet, she said.
Having
forgiven her husband, she now hopes to leave the past behind and carry on with
her life.
