In this age
of social media, people need to be more careful with what they do with
themselves, with other people and the environment in which they do what they do.
Many times,
an innocent fun picture taken with a friend or work colleague has caused untold
harm to the reputation of some of the individuals involved. This is because the
photo and the purpose for which it was taken had been misinterpreted by the judgmental
public.
Marriages
have been broken, relationships have been torn apart, lives have been taken
either by self-harm or by a revengeful partner. Hey people, let’s learn to be
more conscious of our actions and inactions because we have a curious and judgmental
world out there.
That brings
us to the story of a South African female prison official who had some pictures
taken with a male prisoner and the photos eventually leaked to the public. The
pictures quickly went viral on various social media platforms such as Facebook,
Twitter, and Instagram.
Up to 4
different pictures were seen of the female official, who worked at Losperfontein
Correctional Service Centre in South Africa, posing with a male prison inmate
in her work outfit.
The
official, whose name was not disclosed, was so severely criticized not only
because she was seen in the picture kissing and hugging an inmate, but because
she did so in her uniform.
On Monday,
the female official was found hanging in a bedroom in her apartment. Because she
could not stand the criticism and severe embarrassment, she decided to end her
own life.
The
department where she worked later released a statement in which it confirmed
that the female official had committed suicide. The department also noted that
it had kick-started an investigation into the case, stating also that the
photos are under scrutiny.
The
department further condemned any such act of intimate engagement with inmates
as unprofessional and therefore unacceptable.
We also
think that any such act from an official is disturbing and therefore should be
unacceptable. What do you think? Share your views in the comment section.
