A man was
recently found locked up in a filthy room of an abandoned building for 15 years
by his 33-year-old sister, Supasiri Kamwiratch, in Thailand.
Supasiri had
her brother, Kamwiratch Paitun, 30, locked up in a room of an insignificant
house located at southeast of Bangkok in a seaside district of Rayong province
since 2002.
For 15
years, Paitun did not set his eyes on anyone other than his sister, Supasiri,
and the owner of the building. All he did was to stare at the walls and
occasionally listen to music. He was routinely supplied food and water once
each day by his sister.
Rescue
workers, acting on a tip-off, stormed the building on December 26, 2017, and
saw the unkempt 30-year-old. Apart from Supasiri and the landlord, no one in
the area knew that someone had been living there for many years. Everyone thought
the building was entirely abandoned.
Authorities
heard that the sister did not act maliciously. The sister had explained that
she had to lock up her brother because of a mental health issue which developed
in the wake of their father’s death in 2002.
According to
Supasiri, she had feared for the life of her brother who would usually run
outside without clothes. She didn’t want him to hurt himself or injure someone
else. Officials planned to take Paitun, who shied from human contact, for
psychological evaluation at a hospital.
According to
a police report, his sister is not likely to face charges because she did not
act maliciously when she had her brother locked up for that many years.
