29-year-old
Gonzalo Montoya Jiménez woke just hours before the post-mortem. He was in a
body bag in a hospital mortuary after he had been declared dead by three
doctors earlier.
Jiménez is a
prisoner in Spain and has been described as ‘exceptional’ following his
remarkable feat of dying and coming back to life. The ‘dead’ man had already
spent a short time in a cold room in the mortuary. Reportedly, his body had
marks on it as he was being prepared for autopsy.
Mortuary
staff was stunned to see him come back to life last Sunday just hours before
the post-mortem examination was due to be carried out. According to
authorities, the prisoner was believed to have died in his cell at about 8 a.m.
After he did
not show up for the routine morning count, Jiménez was found slumped in a chair
following a complaint of ill feeling a day before. He was said to have been
placed in the most dangerous section of the prison population. According to
officials, there was no clear sign of foul play and a pulse could not be
established.
He was
suspected to have suffered from rigor mortis. The purplish discoloration in
skin that shows after the death of a person was said to have appeared on his
body. All attempts to revive him amounted to nothing and thereafter, he was
declared dead.
Forensic
doctors were the ones that heard noises coming from inside the bag and as such
went ahead to open it upon which Jiménez was found still alive. The first words
he uttered after awakening were about his wife, to see her. The prisoner has
been placed in intensive care at a hospital in Oviedo.
