Nicole
Sifrit, and her partner Shane Sifrit celebrated the birth of their daughter, Mariana,
on July 1 and a couple of days later, the two had their wedding. The newlywed couple
is now warning parents to be careful about whom they allow around their
children and says, ‘don’t allow strangers to kiss your child!’
Just hours
after tying the knot, the Iowa couple noticed that their little baby had
stopped eating so they hurriedly took her to a hospital where they were told
that she had contracted a type of meningitis - the same herpes virus that
causes cold sores.
Both parents
tested negative for the virus and doctors suggested that the eighteen days old
baby contracted the virus from a kiss from someone who carries the virus.
In a heartbreaking
post on Facebook, Nicole announced on Tuesday that Mariana had died. She wrote,
’Our princess Mariana Reese Sifrit gained her angel wings at 8:41 am this
morning in her daddy's arms and her mommy right beside her.’ She also added, ‘She
is now no longer suffering and is with the Lord.’
In her post,
33-year-old Nicole thanked everyone who had followed the unfortunate incident
and gave them support. ‘In her 18 days of life she made a huge impact on the
world and we hope with Mariana's Story we save numerous newborns life. R.I.P.
sweet angel,’ she wrote.
The newly
married couple is warning parents to be careful about whom they allow around
their newborn children in the hopes of averting a similar tragedy in the
future.
Speaking to
reporters, Nicole said, ’I always thought this stuff happens and it's a shame
and never thought it would happen to me.’ She said she wasn’t prepared at all.
She further
advised other parents to keep their babies isolated, ‘Don't let just anyone
come visit them. Make sure they are constantly washing their hands,’ and then
added, ‘don’t let people kiss your baby and make sure they ask before they pick
up your baby.’
