Tragedy
struck in a little town of Obanikulu, Cross River State, Nigeria when on
Thursday five children died after reportedly eating cucumber given to them by
their great grandmother. On hearing the news about the death of her great
grandchildren, the woman also slumped and died.
Sources said
that the children, who were under the supervision of their great grandmother,
ate the fruit in the absence of their grandmother, Mrs. Dorothy Agbor, who had
attended a burial ceremony of one Mr. Kechie.
Upon her
return the next morning, the grandmother discovered that 5 of her grandchildren
were unconscious, and then shouted for help. This attracted the attention of
friends, neighbors, and colleagues who rushed into her assistance and helped in
taking the victims to a nearby clinic.
At the
clinic, a few minutes later, one female child gave up the ghost. Two hours
later, 2 boys died. As though that wasn’t enough, in another 4 hours a female
child died. Very much later, a fifth victim died.
When she
heard the tragic news, their great grandmother under whose supervision the
children consumed the vegetable slumped and died, bringing the death tolls to 6
in one home. What a sad event!
The host
community, known as AMANA, has however rejected the idea of burying the dead in
their land. They described it as tragedy, and that such an event had never
happened in their town before. They, therefore, stated that in order to avoid a
future occurrence, the bodies have to be taken elsewhere for burial.
It is not
clear who or how the cucumber was poisoned as their great granny who happens to
be the only clue to what happened also died of a heart attack shortly after
receiving the news.
A Facebook user, Paul Baji, who shared news of
the sad event on his page, stated how five grandchildren of one Mrs. Dorothy
Agbor from a town called Ikwette also known as Bottom Hill had lost their lives
after eating cucumber.
