Kenyan Businessman Charged With Assaulting His Mother

Kenyan business tycoon, Raj Devani has been charged with assaulting his mother and is to appear in court on Thursday, March 2 for bail ruling.

Devani was arrested on Tuesday and arraigned in court on Wednesday. He denied charges of assault and causing bodily harm before Kiambu Magistrate, Stella Atambo. Raj was accused of attacking his 66-year-old mother, Bambi Devani, on the night of February 28 at their home in Runda.

The prosecution, led by Diana Orago, urged the court not to grant the businessman bail since he has other cases. “The accused has failed the tests of attending court sessions. Two other courts in Milimani and Narok have issued warrants [for his arrest],” said Orago.

The charge sheet read “On February 28, 2017 at around 9.40pm at Runda within Nairobi County, he willingly and unlawfully assaulted Bambi Harikrishna Devani thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm,”

In 2014, Raj was arraigned before a Milimani Magistrate Court over allegations of firing a gun in public. In 2012, a security guard, Enock Bikeri had accused Devani of assault saying the businessman threatened him with a gun but later withdrew his complaint.
